I hope it stabilizes someplace, anyplace, and stays there. These fluctuations have really messed us up. What does it work out to for a beer these days in Sosua, two or three bucks? Jeez, I can buy a beer in a local ripoff strip joint 5 minutes from where I live for 5 bucks. Some of those meals I was enjoying at Morua Mai would be 10 to 15 bucks now, with a drink or two. Fuck. I can eat at a mind boggling buffet here in the US for less than that. I know, I know, we can afford it but shit, it's a third world country and we pay US prices? Just bugs me. Maybe it bugs me a little more than others because from south florida the usual airfares to POP are a few hundred bucks more than the flights from NYC, so I feel ripped off before I have even left the ground.

Just had to blow off a little steam.

The DR is still a great place to go. Hell, the prices in the tourist areas, anywhere in the world, are always higher than normal anyway. That's the way it is. Unbelievable how cheap things can get outside of those areas. In Chiang Mai, TL, I treated my GF and three of her friends to appetizers, dinners and drinks in her home neighborhood for only a little bit more than what I had been spending on a small steak dinner for me alone back in the tourist area.

That reminds me, gotta check the restaurant board for a good place to eat in Los Charamicos.

About airport Exchange rate...

I tried to buy myself some presents at the airport (and for the quitie I met there) but had a lot of pesos and no dollars (I'm from Europe).

1) All prices in tax-free are in dollars, you can pay in euro's at a 1:1 rate (shaving 10-15% off the euro rate)

2) You can pay in pesos after haggling but at 45:1, at that time the peso was 28:1 so almost doubling their prices.

I just looked at the receipt laughed and told them to charge it to my CC

First trip, exchange a few bucks at the airport just to have something in your pocket. 2-3 peso's difference is a small price to pay to have the local currency if you need it.

After that, on subsequent trips, TAKE 2-3000 pesos with you so you have something to work with arriving, and then exchange your money at better rates away from the airport.

Occasional airport scam: When you de-plane, if it comes time to search your luggage, one guy might try to stand in front of you and try to question/talk to you to distract you while the guy behind the counter is opening your bag: Ignore the putz standing in front of you, step around him if you have to, but DON't take your eyes off the guy going through your bag! Fukkin' theivin' bastards are quick and will rob you in a NY minute if you give them 1/2 a chance. Pay 'em a bribe ($5-$10 if YOU want to, but NOT recomended).

Tell the guy that tries to grab your bag "no, gracias" 25 times in a row without stopping (or until he gives up) and just keep walking with it.

Regarding "changing $ on the street"...A guy named "Titti Frutti" is OK (cell: 494-0411), but always got a better rate from "Santiago" (casa: 571-1646)...Did 2K in Feb. @50+:1 with him...no "3 card monty" here...Everyone counts 3 times. And don't be afraid to squeeze these guys. They're used to it. Make believe you are negotiating with a chica! LOL

In order to establish new Resistance and Support on $USD/$RD pair, we need to stay in a range for a few more months, we just broke out of a trading range. Do you follow EUR/$USD. Take a look at that beauty!
The Dollar is trading at a 9 month low vs EUR as we speak.

The EUR/USD freight train is going higher.
It looks like 1.2750 is new support.
You will have a chance to buy even cheaper US Equities.
S&Ps at 1080 start to look like a buy!

the 30ish to 1 thing is killing me. Its making me rethink how many trips I make down south. Lets look at it this way. A beer used to cost me 1 Dollar, now its almost 2 bucks....A chicken sandwich is 350 pesos at PJs thats almost 12 bucks......nothing cheap about that.....MoraMia...LOL forget it...that place wasn`t cheap to begin with, now with the exchange rate....it will cost you 30 bucks for spaggetti.....

I need to find myself a new 3rd word country

El D, I have to agree with ya on this one. Especially since I always stay for either two or three weeks, this starts adding up real fast.
I used to just buy a lot of girls beers without even thinking about it. Don't do that anymore. I'm more selective. Plus in the morning I just go to the panaderia for getting breakfast instead of a restaurant. And I don't go out to eat anymore every night. Sometimes I just get chicken or something from one of the stands.
Brazil is getting more attractive this way.....but i'm afraid I would miss the whole social thing of just hanging out and shooting the shit with the girls and the other mongers there. Colombia would be better than cos they speak spanish, but I'm worried about crime there.
Far East is out for me since I'm not into eastern chicks.

What's worse they halved in value thanks to a guy named **** who is currently investigating the insurance industry..

The exchange rate (Dollar to Pesos) seems to be holding steady at about 32 to 32.5, at least during the last few weeks. On my last trip the rate was about 48.5. Would that mean that the current short time, which was 1000, should now be 600-700? That would make TLNs now 1000?

Happy Hunting,

JD
