it can be very wild those days because ther 's no money in the country.

Even myself have been trapped in august in Santo domingo and i don't really look like a "target gringo".

it was 7 p.m. in gazcue , 50 meters from the vice president house while walking alone in this dark part of the street.

i am alive and still enjoying it but it is true that the temptation is so great to make easy money....

So it's necessary to take care in the bad area but also and may be more when you don't think about it.

Actually, Gazcue has had some pretty serious problems in the last three months,or so. But, Santo Domingo IS a big city, and with that comes the usual problems. I have yet to feel comfortable in el capital, maybe because I don't go there that often. And I get around in one of MX's most infamous ciudads just fine at any hour , so I am no shrinking violet.

Best to be aware, and basically sober, but if you have a driver you trust, then you can party a bit harder, imho. I've never felt threatened in BC. And I have been pretty trashed a time or two, sorry to say, and probably easy pickings. But never a problem (well except from one pregnant chica a friend dragged off of me).

Welcome to the party pal...Every third world country is going to have its dark and dangerous elements.

Hell you can get mugged and murdered in NYC and we are a Super Power.

I agree with you about the capital. You really need to have a driver you can trust. On my last trip Miguel, my driver, took excellent care of me.
The one time Miguel wasn't with me, a driver outside the Jaragua tried to charge me "Gringo" prices. He dropped 50 pesos when I started to negociate with him in Spanish.

Cuidate,

JD

Big deal this is just business as usual...

Trust me every time I board an American Airlines flight I always see a Dominican in leg irons being escorted to the back of the plane.

This is an every day occurence.

Think Cuba in the early 80's...The Beard cleaned out his prisons by sending everyone to America.

One time I walked out of the Jaragua Casino. It was around 4am. I was walking to the Napolitano Hotel. One guy threw a tissue at me. No big deal. But I'm glad it was not a rock or a knife.
