Yesterday, Rigo Rodriguez won the race for one of three available City Council seats in Paterson, New Jersey. His victory makes him the first Dominican-elected councilman in the history of Paterson. The City of Paterson has an estimated 150,000 residents with over 20% of the population of Dominican descent according to the 2000 U.S. Census. Paterson is the city with the largest Dominican population in New Jersey. Rodriguez will take office on 1 July 2006. Additionally, Councilman Manuel Segura of Trenton, NJ and Tilo Rivas of Union City, NJ won their first re-election races for council seats in their cities, respectively. Under New Jersey law, non-partisan elections take place in May while traditional partisan elections take place in November. According to the Washington, DC-based Dominican American National Roundtable (DANR), the state of New Jersey will now have six Dominican elected officials at the level of council or higher, which will equal the number of Dominican elected officials in the state of New York.
