The Small and Medium-sized Bakeries Union (UMPIH) is complaining about the increasing costs of doing business. Flour has risen by 15% so far this year, going from RD$800 per 100 pound bag to RD$950. Propane gas has also increased in price, in spite of a substantial government subsidy. And, of course, there are the ever-present complaints about electricity shortages. These problems have led to several bakery closures in Santiago and Bonao, which the UMPIH cited as examples of the problems the sector was facing. The UMPIH press note, as reported in Hoy, said that the association would be meeting soon in order to determine whether yet another price increase in the price of bread would be necessary.
