The 2006 hurricane season is just three weeks away. The National Emergency Commission (COE) began a preparation workshop yesterday. One of the reasons for the early start is because renowned hurricane specialists such as Phillip Klotzbach and William Gray from the University of Colorado have predicted a more active season than in 2005. Readers may well remember that the National Hurricane Service ran out of names last year and resorted to using the first letters of the Greek alphabet to identify named storms in the later part of the season as well as after the season was over. Nicky Fabiancic, the resident coordinator for the United Nations Development Program in the Dominican Republic, delivered this information during the workshop. According to the information shared at the workshop, which will continue all this week, there are nine hurricanes expected and 17 tropical storms. Five of the hurricanes are expected to be major ones (Category 3, 4 or 5).
