The government will spend RD$300 million in a program to provide solar panels for 10,000 homes along the frontier. The program is being coordinated by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce Department of Non-Conventional Energy. Salvador Rivas, the program leader, told El Caribe reporters that the recipients of the solar panels will pay quotas varying from RD$100 to RD$125 per month for 42 months. These funds will go towards the creation of a maintenance fund and for the continuation of the program. The project will take place in Montecristi, Santiago Rodriguez, Baoruco, and Pedernales provinces and in the coming weeks will incorporate families living in the provinces of Independencia and Elias Pina. The solar panels are designed to provide for the use of up to five low-consumption light bulbs, a small television set, and, if energy is saved, the families can use a small washing machine once a week.
