The Dominican government has appointed Fiona Gilmore of the UK-based Acanchi Limited consulting firm to lead the first initiative at country branding. Fiona Gilmore has an established track record in country branding having led similar efforts in Hong Kong, England, Lebanon and Zambia.

Eddy Martinez, of the Center for Exports and Investment (CEI-RD), is the chief government officer in charge of the program. The program also has the backing of the National Competitiveness Council (CNC). Acanchi's teams will be visiting the country as of May to begin to get to know the island and the local community over the next six months.

The Acanchi vision is that brand strategy is closely connected with development strategy. The intent is to highlight and reinforce the island's competitiveness advantages and appeal and capture the spirit of its people.

During a career spanning 25 years, Fiona Gilmore has also advised on communications, strategy, brand positioning, architecture, innovation, migration and internal communication matters. She has contributed to the branding of leading global companies such as Vodafone, Unilever and Armani.

She is the author of three books: Brand Warriors, Warriors on the High Wire and Brand Warriors China.
