I have several observations from my last trip.

1: If you plan to book at the New Garden in December or January you should make reservations soon before the Italians. I'm not shilling, I'm just the messenger.

2: Elevex, a generic version of Cialis like La Pela, is definitely more potent. The pill is shaped like Cialis and when chewed has the same taste and texture. This is unlike La Pela that now tastes bitter. Elevex costs 50 pesos per pill. No contest between the two, in my opinion.

3: The chica and the motoconcho pickpocket routine continues. My friend was accosted in the early evening no more than 15 feet from the entrance to the New Garden. She casually got off the moto and came over and put her arms around his neck. Next she grabbed his balls hard enough to make him yelp and with the other hand lifted 600 pesos from his pocket. Even though he had read of this happening on this board, he still fell victim to it.

If ya don't know them, don't touch them, don't let them touch you...

....think of it like a dude (you don't know) comin up to ya and puttin his arms around you.....drop the cunt to the ground and immediately set your stance to take on "el chopo" the motoman......

I would love to see this cunt try that shit on me.
Do they prey on single guys walking alone? or is she ballsy enough to try this on a group of guys ? I'm guessing single guys only.

This was a ballsy chica. I was behind my friend with a chica so we were a group of three. Since so many chicas get off of motoconchos in front of the NG, I didn't think much of it and strolled in through the gate while she made his move on him. When I heard him yelp after she grabbed his balls, I went back out the gate to see what was up and he was cussing her out but at that point he hadn't realized she had pickpocketed him. She casually got back on the motoconcho and I asked him if she had gotten anything out of his pockets. It was only then that he realized she had gotten the 600 pesos.

If she hadn't attempted this so close to the front gate of the NG, I'm sure our reaction to her behavior would have been different. We got lulled into a false sense of security.

Yeah, considering there was a 2000 peso note left in that pocket that wasn't folded in with the rest.

I forgot a 4th observation. If you get an eye infection like pink eye, don't treat it lightly. Another amigo (not the one that got pickpocketed) developed an infection in both his eyes early on in his trip. He first self medicated himself with something they thought would work at the farmacia. It didn't get any better, so he went to a clinic in Sosua and they prescribed a different medicine and that didn't work. By this time he was scheduled to leave and when he went to the airport they wouldn't let him on the plane because of his eyes. Finally Herman referred him to an opthamologist in POP who diagnosed him with a drug resistant case. This doctor obviously knew his/her stuff because he was prescribed something else that cleared it up in about 24 hours. He said it hurt like hell. He was scheduled to leave initially on Sunday Sept.7 and wasn't able to leave until Saturday Sept. 13.

Conjunctivitis alert
The Dominican Ophthalmology Society is warning of a dramatic increase in conjunctivitis cases nationwide. The medical society also warns members of the public to avoid using medication that has not been prescribed by a doctor, as well as popular remedies such as washing eyes with soap, aloe vera or lime because this could burn the cornea. They advise that once a burning sensation is felt, the patient should refrain from touching their eyes, despite the discomfort. Touching one's eyes will only make a simple infection become serious," says the society.
Both the current president of the Ophthalmology Society Cynthia Cunillera Batlle and her predecessor Herbert Stern recommend strict hygiene measures; avoid the use of cloth handkerchiefs, makeup and contact lenses.
The governor of Santiago could not attend the launch of Expo Cibao because he was suffering from conjunctivitis.

'Pink eye' warning
Nelson Rodriguez Moreno, sub-director of Collective Health at the Ministry of Public Health, says that 45,000 cases of conjunctivitis were registered in the DR this year, most appearing during the last two months. Rodriguez described this as a national epidemic and said that patients often choose to self-medicate instead of going to see a doctor. Rodriguez warns that the types of conjunctivitis found here are both viral and bacterial. The sub director is asking the public to be cautious and aware of the dangers of conjunctivitis and pay attention to hygiene. Conjunctivitis is highly contagious and can be spread through physical contact. Symptoms include eye swelling, irritation and redness.

One chica I was with in July, and then my wingman was with in August, had conjunctivitis, and had self-medicated (unsuccessfully, of course) until my gringo friend took her to the clinic and paid for treatment. Should have more info on that in my trip report, if I ever get around to finishing it.

If you get it, you should go to Puerto Plata to a female opthamologist who has the expertise to diagnosis and give you the correct medicine. I don't know her name, but Hermann at Siempre Sol knows her. The clinics in Sosua will only be guessing. My friend who had it at Labor day found out the hard way that they don't always guess right.

I wear contact lens and this got me worried. It's important to have clean pillow cases and do not share towels. Here is a website that goes into more details on "Pink Eye".

You will never find me rubbing my eyes without washing my hands first.
I just don't understand why all of a sudden there is an outbreak in DR.

They wouldn't let him on the plane until it was cleared up, so he didn't leave until the next Saturday. Once he went to the opthamologist in Puerto Plata, she prescribed the right medicines and it cleared up quickly.

After seeing what he went through, it's nothing to take lightly.
