What is thought to be the earliest human settlement reported in the Caribbean has been discovered in the near Bayahibe, in La Altagracia province. Human remains and pottery were carbon 14 tested by researchers Gabriel Atiles and Adolfo Lopez to determine their age. The test showed an approximate date of 1370 to 1080 BC. The find was made at the archaeological site uncovered during the construction of the new Technical Training Center built by funding from Tour Operators Initiative and Swiss company Hotelplan and Bayahibe hoteliers. The Bayahibe-Romana Association of Hotels has published a booklet about the discovery. During the excavation the researchers said they uncovered pollen remains of the endemic flower known as Rosa de Bayahibe, which dates back to 13,000 BC.
