In a Hoy editorial column today, the editorial writer points to what it calls tolerance and covering up by the authorities in the case of criminals who are stealing metal gates belonging to individuals and government bodies throughout the DR. "One does not have to make great effort to count the number of furnaces and ovens that exist," he writes. "Or to carry out an inventory of the centers that buy scrap metal and those that export these," he adds. The columnist also comments on how the removal off metal gates requires personnel and equipment and this cannot be carried out without anyone finding out. Recently, in addition to the gates, there is extensive robbery of identification plaques, sewage covers, and railings from bridges and overpasses. "One cannot understand, then, how in this country there is so much impugn movement of metal extracted from all places at all times," he writes. "People are convinced that there are too many thefts of metal pieces. We, for a change, given the limits of this business, are convinced that what is happening here is that these thefts are being tolerated and covered up, which is very different."
