A study carried out by the Dominican Petroleum Refinery seems to encourage the consumption of liquefied petroleum gas as primary fuel for vehicles, as reported in Listin Diario. Consumption of LPG has increased by 24%, while the use of regular gasoline has declined by 40% in the past two years, reflecting the major difference in price. Refidomsa says that there are approximately 36,000 vehicles running on GLP, that in the past was heavily subsidized by the government. Most of these vehicles also run on gasoline. The government last year let the price float, considerably reducing the subsidy down to RD$17.35 per gallon. Refidomsa argues that LPG results in better combustion for vehicles, and is easier on the environment. Three companies distribute LPG in the DR - Refidomsa, Coastal and Mundo Gas. Subsidized gas sells for RD$39.51 (sales of 314,528,458 gallons in 2005) and non-subsidized gas for RD$61.38 (sales of 1,059,585 in 2005) this week. http://www.refidomsa.com.do/
