The Penn Shoen & Berland-El Caribe pollsters asked Dominicans if the country needed an iron-fisted government (the so-called mano dura) and 82% answered yes. In an editorial today, Hoy newspaper says that the percentage, which is 14 points above the 68% recorded when the same question was asked in 1992, reflects the increase in crime in the Dominican Republic. The same poll showed that Dominicans consider violence and crime as the second most pressing problem that needs addressing, second only to government corruption.
