Parques Eolicos del Caribe is installing an wind power generator in the province of Montecristi. The company is a subsidiary of Gamesa Energia, one of the largest wind farm developers in the world with a current global development portfolio of some 15,000 MW. This is part of a set of measures being promoted by the Spanish and DR governments in compliance with the Kyoto Protocol that obliges industrialized nations to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions or to finance projects for the production of clean energy in developing countries. The generators use wind to produce energy. Signed in 1977, the Kyoto Protocol establishes penalties for countries that do not reduce their CO2 emissions unless they help to finance projects in poorer countries, according to a report by Diario Libre. The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources reports that this project will produce approximately 64.6 MW and will reduce CO2 production by 110,000 tons per year.
