Smuggling operations trying to evade RD$48.1 million in duties have been intercepted by the Customs Department, announced Customs Director Miguel Cocco. Six containers have been seized over the past 45 days after an investigation that determined the involvement of 27 Customs Department employees who were fired and indicted, according to a report by Diario Libre. The Criminal Procedures Code does not allow disclosure of the names of those indicted. The containers - laden with audio equipment, computers, air conditioners, beverages, household appliances, and textiles - were seized in the Haina Occidental port. Cocco said that customs evasions discovered since August 2004 amount to RD$3 billion.
