Polls in the DR have been open since 6:00am today for Dominicans to choose 32 senators, 178 deputies, 151 mayors and their deputy mayors and 963 city council representatives among 14,200 candidates from 21 political parties and movements. The Central Electoral Board says that 5.6 million people are eligible to vote. The largest voter concentrations are in the Province of Santo Domingo with 1,032,026 eligible to vote, the National District - city of Santo Domingo with 723,078 eligible to vote, and Santiago with 604,429 voters. Some 12,321 voting stations have been set up, most in government buildings and public schools nationwide. There are 2,438 elective posts.


The total of voters includes 2,665,550 men (49.65%) and 2,703,514 women (50.35%). 1,399,653 voters are between 25-34 years old (26.07%), followed by, 1,201,715 age 35-44 years (22.38%), 55 years and over 1,025,698 (19.10%), 18-24 years 917,491 voters and 45-54 years or 824,507 (15.36%). Luis Arias, president of the Central Electoral Board, announced that firearms, cell phones and photographic cameras are prohibited in voting stations. In addition, yesterday the JCE announced a ban on alcoholic beverages from 6:00am to 9:00pm today, lasting until three hours after the polls close. OMSA, the governmental bus service, will be offering free transportation for voters between 6:00am and 7:00pm.


The congressional and municipal polls are costing taxpayers RD$900 million.
