For the Canadian brotherhood on the board, Sunwing is offering flights from Toronto to Puerto Plata for 1 week departing November 3rd and 10th for $55.00 CAN + $298.00 CAN (taxes and fees) = $353.00 CAN. See the Flight Centre website. But here's something strange about these sell offs........If you were to fly to Puerto Plata for 2 weeks on Nov 3 it would cost $773.00 CAN (incl taxes). However, if you took the Nov 3 flight for 1 week, returned home and flew back on the Nov 10 flight (which chronologically speaking is easily possible), it would cost $353.00 X 2= $706.00 CAN. Go figure! In essence, you would be returning home after 2 weeks on the same flight!!

The taxes to fly to the DR are getting really stupid.......I don't get it...the taxes to fly to Cuba are almost $100 less....

I don't know what was going on at the POP airport a few weeks ago, but there was no $25 departure tax to be paid:)....that was strange...

I dont recall paying this either when i returned home in May. One good thing about flying out of canada is u get to avoid that tourist card fee. I beleive its included in our price,, correct?

I noticed the taxes on our flights. Sometimes, its $200-$250 and something in tax with one airliner, and it can be $150-$225 or so with another airline. Cant figure that one out either.

What website do u guys use to find these last minute cheap flights? I use sellofvacations.com, bellairedirect and redtag

I just checked those dates and it does say it is $55, but, if u pretend to buy the ticket, it comes up like this. This is using sell of vacations.com

Category Price Taxes Total (CAD)
Per Passenger
ADULT (1) $ 141.38 $ 298.00 $ 439.38
GRAND TOTAL $439.38
I have read and accept the Conditions. Yes No

Now using the website redtag vacations, it also is listing the flight for $55 but, when u pretend to purchase this flight, it comes back looking like this

1 Adult(s) x $145.00 $145.00 CAD
All applicable taxes: 1 x $298.00 $298.00 CAD
Total per person $443.00 CAD
Handling Fees: $0.00 CAD
Grand Total $443.00 CAD
To book this deal call 1-866-573-3824 or press continue to book this online.

And, when using belairtravel, they also advertise for that flight for $55 but.this is what i get

1 Adult(s) x $145.00 + All Applicable Taxes $298.00 = $443.00
RBC Travel Insurance for all passengers: = $0.00
Handling Fees: = $0.00

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total cost for all travelers: $443.00

Must be a glitch. Its odd they all advertise for the $55 but they all are going to charge around $145

I dont ever recall paying this high of taxes on a flight. My guess is they are rising like everything else is rising.

I'm pretty sure they are all quoting the same SunWing flight at that price...but obviously the $55 dollars price is not being quoted in the final price..somethings wrong:wink:

I agree, that is very odd! I just followed a link from an email I get that monitors the cheap flights. I didn't actually try to book and verify the price. Nice catch!!

In terms of the taxes etc, I'm told that the DR charges higher landing fees than say Cuba and other Caribbean countries. Sometimes it is shown as a tax, other times it is shown as a fee, when you read the breakdown of the total fare.

Cainer, if you just check Sunseekers every few days or so, that will work also...usually it's last minute stuff...I do notice some very cheap trips to Holguin Cuba at the beginning of Dec. also...in the $85 range..plus taxes..

I used to get the notice of the cheap flights but it was never really totally accurate...always found deals on Sunseekers, that wasn't on the e-mail that I received

Sunseekers is IMO still the best all around site for finding cheap flights to the DR and Cuba...and the least hassle in getting tickets.....I've booked so often with them that Linda from Sunseekers asked me out for a coffee next time I'm in Winnipeg..which I will do

Here are 3 sites where you can sign up for newsletters. They usually come out on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and give you a quick and dirty run down on specials. However, this consists of not only airfares but also hotels, packages etc.

www.travelalerts.ca

www.travelzoo.com

www.flightcentre.ca

As LM said above, checking sites like Sunseekers, Holiday Market Travel etc on a somewhat regular basis is probably the best thing, but to get an idea without all the searching, the newsletters are good.

It seems those $50 seats are now all $150, for nov 3rd and 10th departures, but, i found this today in december. I wanted to go at the end of december, i might have to change plans here. $351 including taxes is a good deal, eh?

Departures for december 1st and december 8th are both $351(taxes included)
