In today's El Caribe, Columnist Jose Baez Guerrero comments that each vote during the congressional and municipal election (2,438 government legislators and officers) cost around US$30, estimating that half of the 5.6 million eligible to vote did actually do so. This would make it the costliest vote anywhere, as Mexican statistics show that the cost of each Mexican vote, at US$26, was already the highest in the world. Baez Guerrero is adding up the RD$900 million the government assigned to the Central Electoral Board, plus double that sum spent by the candidates in their campaigns, a total of about RD$2.7 billion for the election.
