There were, inevitably, some incidents at some of the more than 13,000 polling stations. Some incidents involved well-known figures and others were perpetrated by fanatical followers of one party or the other. So far, two deaths and over a dozen injuries have been reported. Juan Hubieres, the transportation union leader who was running for senator for Monte Plata was arrested for two hours after he and his men forced their entry into a voting station and were found to be carrying a large quantity of weapons, including an antique San Cristobal .30 caliber sub-machine gun. He was released shortly after, but an investigation was called into the arsenal of weapons with him. The driver assigned to Lila Alburquerque, the deputy from San Pedro de Macoris was arrested for carrying an Uzi sub-machinegun. The deaths were the result of political arguments that ended in gunfire, killing a young woman passer-by in Santo Domingo and a political activist in Moca.
