Former President Hipolito Mejia has asked that the National District Court of First Instance assign the date on which he must show up as a witness in the Baninter case trial, which starts today. A report in Diario Libre states that in his letter, Mejia indicates that the magnitude of the case is bound to generate numerous hearings. Today's hearing is scheduled for 9:00am. Defendants in the case are Ramon Baez Figueroa, Marcos Baez, Vivian Lubrano, Luis Alvarez Renta and Jesus Troncoso Ferrua. Over 300 witnesses are being called to take the stand during the trial.

World financial organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have classified the Baninter case as the greatest fraud in history that has to do with the collapse of banks. The IMF representative in the Dominican Republic until recently, Ousmene Mandeng, said that "individually, the Baninter case is the greatest bank fraud in the world, in terms of the country's GNP".
