A report released during the International Workshop on Higher Technological Education in Latin America and the Caribbean revealed what is obvious but not followed: that there is a need for improved links between universities and labor demand of productive sectors. The workshop showed that in the DR there is a major deficiency in masters in research and technological innovation areas. "There is a need for government policies to prioritize the sciences and move from talk to concrete results, such as support for students who are going to study nanotechnology, micro-electronics, physics, math, biology and are willing to work in these fields," said Altagracia Lopez, former rector of Intec University, who worked with the report. Higher Education Minister Ligia Amada Melo said that only six of the 43 Dominican universities offered technological degree courses and she described these as "soft" because they offer areas such as bio-analysis, as opposed to nanotechnology.
