Some 10 hurricanes could develop this year in the Atlantic Ocean and threaten the Caribbean Basin and the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico, according to experts at the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The forecast indicates that the 2006 season will be very active, with 13 to 16 named storms, 8 to 10 hurricanes and 4 to 6 powerful hurricanes - category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson 1 to 5 scale.
