Energy generators are asking the government to pay up in order to restock fuel to generate power. Today the generators are asking the government to pay US$200 million as soon as possible. State-run Electricity Companies (CDEEE) vice president Radhames Segura says the government will not promise to pay that amount, but what the consider a fair sum. After a meeting with representatives from government and the energy sector held at the CDEEE Club, Segura said the DR is depending on US$80 million from a US$180 million World Bank loan and added the government is seeking a second loan of US$50 million. Segura went on to say that the budget only included US$174 million towards the energy sector and the summer spike in fuel prices has made it difficult for the government to pay its debt.
Meanwhile, the energy deficit reported during non-peak hours was 34%, with a demand of 1,775MW and a deficit of 599MW. For peak hours demand was for 1,925MW with a deficit of 405MW, for a 21% deficit. This translates into long hours of blackouts nationwide.
So far, the government has only provided limited answers about their plans to resolve the current energy crisis.
