Chamber of Deputies president Julio Cesar Valentin says that the PLD has instructed its members to vote for the US$93 million loan that will be used to purchase eight Super Tucano fighter jets from Brazil. Voting for the bill goes to the floor of the chamber tomorrow. Supporters say the purchase of the planes will help the country fight illegal drug trafficking and provide the Dominican Air Force with the ability to intercept and chase drug planes. However, opponents claim that the Tucanos are not the best choice. Other opponents say that the planes will be useless if the country does not have radars that can effectively track the planes, and if Congress does not pass a bill that would enable the planes on irregular flight plans to be gunned down.
According to experts, the Tucanos are slow and outdated aircraft that are years behind the technology used by drug traffickers. Advocates for the deal have ignored these warning and say this is the best option for fighting drugs in the DR.
