Senator Dionis Sanchez of Pedernales has denounced the fact that the country is continually being bombarded by small planes that drop drug shipments over his southwestern province. He called out for the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) to provide an explanation for the boom in drug trafficking in that area. Meanwhile, Peravia Senator Wilton Guerrero asks how is it possible that drugs continue to be dropped in full view of all and the authorities do not detect the cargos when they are transported to the cities by land. Mario Torres, the Senator for Dajabon denounced the increase in the number of sales points in his province. The three senators were speaking during a Senate session when the topic of drugs was discussed. Senator Dionis Sanchez pointed out that in Los Tres Charcos, in Oviedo municipality, drug drops took place at 1am and at 6pm on 24 October and the packets were visible to local residents. He challenged the DNCD to explain how these operations can happen so openly, as reported in Hoy. Senator Guerrero wondered if the authorities that are backing the purchase of the Super Tucano jet planes will be able to use them if they cannot pursue the drug traffickers by land. He said that if the drugs are launched from the small planes with everyone able to see this happening, what is correct and logical is that there should be surveillance to arrest those who transport the drugs by land. Senator Torres complained that the many drug points are destroying Dominican youth and the country "and nobody says anything." He said that the claims that drug traffickers have contacts in higher-up echelons of government have remained unaddressed.
