As the start date for the DR-CAFTA deal gets closer, the Center for Foreign Investment (CEI-RD) is receiving an increasing number of inquiries about investments in the Dominican Republic. According to CEI director Eddy Martinez Manzueta, the authorities estimate that by 2007 over 100,000 new jobs will have been created by these new investments. In a report in Listin Diario, Martinez points out how the comparative advantages of the new rules have attracted such industries as the new Sara Lee factory in Bonao or the many call centers that already have 15,000 employees and are expected to double by 2007. According to the report, Martinez Manzueta calculates that each of the new industries will also generate 6,000 to 7,000 indirect jobs. Martinez extolled the virtues of investing in the DR, among which he mentioned the port facilities, the airports and the country's geographic position.
