The Kingdom of Cambodia and the Dominican Republic have signed a protocol establishing bilateral diplomatic relations during an official ceremony at the headquarters of the Cambodian Embassy in Hanoi, during a visit to Vietnam by DR Minister and Special Envoy to Asia, Miguel Mejia.
The agreement was signed by Mejia and Cambodian Ambassador Van Phal. Hans Dannenberg Castellanos, Dominican Ambassador in India whose remit also includes Vietnam also attended. The Kingdom of Cambodia and the Dominican Republic are full members of the Forum for Eastern Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC) and also of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries. President Leonel Fernandez and Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso are backing a drive to diversify diplomatic relations with African and Asian countries, in order to boost opportunities for economic and trade ties. In particular, there is growing interest in cooperation in the fields of tourism, agriculture, culture and science and technology.
Cambodia is now opening up as a tourist destination, attractive for its historical relics and beautiful scenery. Cambodia is famous for the ruins at Angkor Wat, the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire, which was declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1992. Cambodia also has a rich textile industry and is concentrating on developing its agricultural production.
