District Attorney Juan Manuel Hernandez Peguero has told the press that he received death threats from former army colonel and chief of military security to Hipolito Mejia during his administration, Pedro Julio "Pepe" Goico Guerrero in retaliation for accusations of asset laundering made against the former colonel, as reported by El Caribe. According to the DA, "Goico sent me a message with Prosecutor Polanco saying that in Spain, the trend is to hire paid assassins from Colombia to eliminate a specific person, and that system could start to be used here from now on." The DA said this is not the first time he has received a death threat since he has been in office but refused to reveal who had made the previous threats. Goico returned to the country and was arrested and sent to the La Victoria prison shortly after arriving from Spain, where he had migrated in September 2004, following the last change of government.
