The Presidents of Mexico, Vicente Fox, and Colombia, Alvaro Uribe, have confirmed their attendance at the summit of the Central American Integration System (SICA), to be held in Casa de Campo, La Romana, where the installation of a new refinery and gas pipeline in the region will be discussed. The gas pipeline and oil refinery are being sponsored by Mexico, and the Dominican Republic is one of the countries where it could be installed, as reported by El Caribe. The announcement was made by Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso during a press conference at the Presidential Palace where he provided details about the summit. Among other issues, the group will seek relief from the pressure represented by the supply of oil and gas to the countries in the system and to add flexibility to mechanisms for the use of funds of the San Jose Accord. Morales said that the Dominican government would make a presentation highlighting the conditions the country offers for the installation of a refinery, but specified that other countries are also interested in having it set up in their territory.
