A meeting was held last Friday afternoon in the theatre at Casa Marina, between the owners of the various discos, bars and restaurants in Sosúa, led by chairman Wilfredo Olívense (Willy El Chamo), during which specific claims were made by the owners of two discos: Club X and D' Classico. The former, owned by Charly Pérez, is now open until very late and offers its clients special shows. This means that the After One disco, owned by Amando Casciati, where most partygoers would move on to after the other discos closed, now has far fewer customers. According to Armando Casciati, the owner of Club X enjoys special privileges because he's Dominican. The chairman tried to bring everyone to order, and assured everyone present that they all had to abide by the same laws. There are no exceptions. The chief of the national police in Puerto Plata, general Ir. Calderón Efres, and the representative of the Ministry of Tourism, Radhames Guzmán Balbuena, also assured everyone that there was only one law.
Club X vs D'Classico
The fact that Armando Casciati is a foreigner (Italian) does not mean that he has no rights. The police chief and the representative of the Ministry of Tourism will set out new regulations for the various discos in Sosúa. Hopefully the dispute between the two discos will then be resolved.

When will they learn. You need about x amount of people to have a successful club. There is barely 1x in Sosua therefore only 1 club will succeed at any given time. What do I know, I only been going to Sosua since 1997 and there are maybe 4 places that are open longer than a year since I started going there, passions, Shark Bar, Bailys, to name 3.

I don't understand. Classico and After One owned by the same person??

Is the owner of After One battling with X or Classico?

After One/Classicos (same guy) v. Club XSo the argument is that Club X is allowed to stay open later than Classico, therefore hurting his after one club business??

Yep, that is what it seems to be.

Yep, that is what it seems to be.So why doesn't Classico/After One just pay off the Policia like Club X does? They could stay open 24 hours if they wanted too!!

Is the owner of After One battling with X or Classico?Yes.

This battle has been going on for some time. I think the owner of Club X is the same owner of the Playa Chiquita Casino (or possibly just the disco).

Perhaps if After One didn't charge an entry fee (150 pesos last week), didn't give out miniturised laminated 50 peso notes as change that all the bar staff want as propinas and didn't only play chopo Bachata and Merengue then maybe punters would go there.

S'funny how he wasn't bitching when After One opened and all the customers stopped going to the Chiquita disco.

Club X rocks (well in comparison only!)

It's pretty simple.

Classicos and Club X are supposed to shut down as per the laws regulating closing times.

Casinos are one of the few businesses that are allowed to stay open later.
(Remember the other casino everyone used to go to, until After One came along?)

The owner of Classicos did the After One Disco as part of a casino, so his Classicos business could move over to After One, and continue the party.

Then, here comes Club X, and starts stepping on his toes. He's crying foul, of course, and technically, he's right.

If the owner of Club X put in a casino, he would be able to do the same, and Classicos/After One couldn't say squat.

BUT, now that they've suspended the closing hours for the holidays, Club X can stay open as long as they want.

But so could Classico's, couldn't they? And if so, their After One business would suffer! I think this dispute is far from resolved, unless the local lawmakers step in.

That's correct, so for now, it's a free for all between the three businesses.

But, there are some other issues running under the surface that most guys don't see.

Club X has ended up with some of Classicos employees, and some of Classicos employees work at After One, after the former closes each night.

So Classicos is going to stay open later, they need to start looking for more employees. Employees are quitting Classicos to work at Club X....... well, you get the picture.

Plus, you've got Secrets coming online AGAIN, this time with gringo management, so that's a wild card out there... well... maybe anyways.

I get the impression that these two guys aren't exactly bosom buddies either..

During the prohibition era club owners took to spraying each others' premises with tommy-guns to resolve similar disputes. Perhaps it is just as well I am stuck in dreary old Albion.

If last Saturday was anything to go by Club X's resurrection will be short lived. Put my head around the door at midnight and there were maybe (maybe) half a dozen people there. At 2am there was nobody there at all! I know it is supposed to be a late night place but it is going to have to be very, very busy later on to make up this kind of lost ground. I am a bit surprised about this as when it was going a year or two back things were never that bad. It seems they have got their music policy seriously wrong.

Meanwhile on the other side of the street Merengue/Classico/Central were all pretty busy, if not quite packed to bursting, throughout my two week trip. Didn't get as far as After One, mainly because most of the chicas I spoke to about it were very negative.

I thought the reason for the problems was since the same guy owns Classicos and AfterOne he was pissed that everyone just went across the street after Classicos closed instead of to his other disco (AfterOne) inside the casino?

The Christmas/New Years hours should be done by now so I wonder whats going on as people don't all want to go home at 2am on the weekends.

Extending closing hours back to what they originally were renders AfterOne useless. It's one thing when closing was 1 a.m. and people still wanted to party. Come 3 a.m. i doubt too many people are gonna leave Classico to trek over to AfterOne or anywhere else (other than home) for that matter.

Before, late November, Classicos was bustling until they closed, along with Latino, then EVERYONE went to Club X. We partied and danced till sunrise almost every night. Such a shame to see this as I'm leaving in a week and was expecting to do the same.

Was Classico Disco open all night? How about the casino after hours, did you try that? Damn, I suppose I'll start having to fuck all night again....

My understanding is that that all the bars and discos can open to 3am weekdays, 4am weekends now, so club X is either going to have to make a hell of a lot of money in a couple of hours each night or find a way of getting people in earlier. I didn't get as far as the after hours disco because most of the chicas I know gave it the thumbs down. It is probably fucked now due to the more relaxed opening hours everywhere else, so the owner of that (and Classico's) has probably shot himself in the foot.

When I was there in early December Club X was going strong after Classico closed each night and for many hours, including some shows now and then.

One night there was a nun doing strip-tease and another there was a spyderman walking around – I liked that club.

I assume she wasn't, just some fancy dress show; but I didn't do any identity check to be honest, so it's anyone's guess...

Was in Classico's last night till around 3 and the place was rocking then went across the street to Club X and it was dead, maybe 12 people in total.
I think a lot of people have probably had enough by 3am and don't need the extra hours especially as there was 150 peso entrance charge to Club X.

In this day and age and recession – AND in the DR, its about volume of customers.
As people are price conscious, to get the volume you have to get the price right.
Making less profit per drink, increase the admissions of people because your drinks are cheap you then have atmosphere.
Without atmosphere you have nothing ie Secrets! Always empty that place – and who wants to go to an empty bar/club.

If I was running a club out there – use the El Flow model.

Funny, "the Dominican way", I'm sure there's a place for those of us to party that want to stay out, I'll be down in less than a week now and will scope it out and report.

I agree, don't know how Club X will compete. Maybe they'll improve the music/DJ, cheaper drinks... who knows. Funny thought though, has anyone else noticed, or is it just me that hears the SAME PLAYLIST from Latino bar every night? I get tired of it when I'm there, but when I'm home, I wish I had the CD so I could subconsciously be there. Ha!
