The National Police, making use of modern electronic tracking techniques, was able to locate the kidnappers' hideout and rescue little nine-year old Luz del Alba Martinez safe and sound. The child had been kidnapped and held for US$225,000 ransom with the threat of "cutting the little girl to pieces." The police Anti-Hostage Unit rescued the child in an apartment in the Carolin neighborhood in Moca. The chief of police announced that Nieve Garcia Adames, Santiago Castillo Martinez and a 16-year old youth had been arrested and charged. Police Chief Major General Bernardo Santana Paez told reporters that the ringleader, Gregorio Martinez, was at large and heavily armed. The chief emphasized that "you (the reporters) know that this is a thing from New York. They know what's up." The child was rescued from apartment 1-A in the Alicia Primera apartment complex. She is the daughter of David Martinez and Orquidia Jimenez. Santana Paez also said that the police knew from the start that the kidnappers were using high- tech communications methods to ask for the ransom money. Today's edition of Hoy explains how the Center for Criminal Intelligence was able to trace phone calls from several Latin American countries as well as from different points within the Dominican Republic. As a result, the police have asked Interpol to issue arrest warrants for people in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and the United States. The evidence was gathered by the police's newly created Electronic Intelligence Unit that was able to track all of the emails, voice mails and text messages sent to the child's grandmother's cell phone and computer.
