An interesting new survey by pollsters Penn Shoen & Berland has brought to light the fact that 66% of the Dominican population is NOT planning on traveling to the United States or any other place, for that matter. The news, carried in today's El Caribe, shows that a third of the population is thinking about traveling. A total of 87% of Dominicans also think that emigration is on the rise. Of those that want to travel, half say they would go to the United States, about a third would go elsewhere, and only 23% would travel but stay in the Dominican Republic. Over the years, the population has also changed its thinking about travel and emigration. In 1992, 49% said that they would go to the United States if there were no risk of dying in the attempt. Only 16% said that they would go to some other country, and 35% said that they would continue to live here. By the year 2000, fewer people said that they would migrate to the US (40%) and fewer said that they would go somewhere else (14%). More people said, in 2000, that they would stay put (46%). In 2006, the number of those staying in the DR was reduced to half (23%). When asked the question: if you could travel to the United States or any other country, without running the risk of dying on the way, would you go to the United States or some other country or would you live here? 76% said that they would leave the DR.
