Two point one billion pesos is no small change. Because the Dominican government has guaranteed the operations, commercial banks put RD$2.1 billion into crop pledges in 2005. The program, developed by the Ministry of Agriculture is trying to provide price stability and earnings for farmers. This year, RD$1.7 billion has been pledged for the country's rice crops. According to Listin Diario, this sum represents the interest for warehousing and handling the products. Commercial banks have already begun the process of capturing the resources needed to finance the crops. To that end, the pool of banks has opened up a loan program for more than five billion pesos to finance the pledging of the rice crops in the main rice production areas. Farmers and millers have already made use of RD$2.0 billion.
