View Full Version : 01/2009 - Around the Jaragua: A Walking Tour of Santo Domingo Clubs Near the Jaragua

I recently did a long walk around the Jaragua Hotel, which is situated on the Malecon (George Washington Avenue), The Malecon runs along the ocean in Santo Domingo. I took this walk from my hotel, the Hotel Riazor, situated right behind the Jaragua Hotel, on Independencia Avenue, which is one block North of the Malecon and runs parallel to it. By taking this walk, you can see many of the most talked-about clubs, casinos, hotels and restaurants. After completing my first visit to Santo Domingo, and seeing lots of the city outside this particular area in my rental car, including the colonial zone less than a mile to the East, and the university area, less than a mile to the west, and other clubs and restaurants to the north, I would say the particular area I will show you in this thread, through pictures I took on my walk around the Jaragua, is a perfect home base for anyone, especially if he doesn't have his own wheels, as I did.

If you're interested in this area, also check the prior thread of Cheeno, with many better pictures of the same stuff: http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/showthread.php?t=39319. (How to get to Sky Blue, The Girl's House, Aurora, Tabu, and Lapsus) Some clubs have changed their names or moved, so my thread here is designed to point out the most current info, current as of two days ago, when I took these photos, and did the walking tour.

Ok, we're going to start at 1 and go to 18.

Sorry that the street names on this picture of my map are illegible. The street along the ocean is George Washington Avenue (the Malecon). The street just north of that and parallel to it, and where we start our journey, is Avenida Independencia. Basically we start at the Riazor Hotel (1) on Independencia Avenue, walk west to Socorro Sanchez, turn left and go down that long block to the ocean, turn left on the George Washington Avenue (the Malecon) and pass by the Jaragua Hotel, the Melia Hotel and the Intercontinental Hotel, before turning left on Avenida Pasteur to get back to Avenida Independencia, where we turn left again to get back to the Hotel Riazor.

Here is what we will see (as numbered on my horrible map):

1) Riazor Hotel
2) Manolo Cafe (restaurant)
3) Aurora Club
4) Riky's Nightclub f/k/a Lapsus (and former Tabu right next door)
5) La Parada (club)
6) La Parada (carwash)
7) La Parada (restaurant/bar)
8) Jaragua Hotel and Casino
9) Melia Hotel and Casino
10)Torre Veiramar (condo highrise)
11) Intercontinental Hotel and Casino
12) Sky High
13) Satin Dolls
14) Girls House
15) Mystik Hotel
16) Hermanos Villar (restaurant)
17) Bank/ATM machine, pharmacy, Claro and Orange Phone Stores
18) PLD (Dominican Liberation Party, headquarters of political party of President Leonel Fernández)

Ok, let's start at the Hotel Riazor (1), where I stayed. Here are a few photos. I left my car in the small parking area in front of this hotel. I never had a problem parking here during my stay. The hotel is $58 US per night, or the equivalent in pesos in cash, including breakfast (it costs a bit more if you pay by credit card). They told me they would charge $7 more per night if I had a guest overnight, but they only charged me on one night, when my chica actually got a coupon for breakfast with me. On the other few nights I had TLNs, I was not charged, but I only got one coupon for breakfast. The breakfast is very basic.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964ec98a57eb.jpg

Here's the business card for the hotel, which still has no website. They take reservations by phone, and you don't even need to give them a credit card number for the reservation, just your name and dates.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174962941fa1b12.jpg

Now, we move to (2), the Manolo Cafe, where you eat breakfast. This place is ALWAYS open, even on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, as the Riazor Hotel and the Manolo have the same owners. You can eat breakfast at any time, say 1 PM, if you want (I did that many times). This is not my photo of the Manolo Cafe. I stole this from Kennilingus recent trip report (thanks Kennilingus!). I could have sworn I took photos of this restaurant, but I can't find any.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174962e5d2aa4c6.jpg

This restaurant is directly across from the back entrance to the Jaragua Hotel. To go to the Jaragua Hotel and Casino, I always walked across from the Manolo Cafe to the back entrance of the Jaragua Hotel, and down its back driveway to the parking lot behind Jaragua, and through the hotel to the casino/disco/bar at the front of the Jaragua.

The Manolo Cafe is at the intersection of Avenida Independencia and Hnos Deligne.

If you keep going West on Independencia Avenue, crossing Hnos Deligne, you will immediately see the Aurora Bar (3) and Riky's Nightclub (4) up ahead on the right.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964e8eaddf54.jpg

Here's a couple pics of the Aurora Bar (3). This afternoon chica was nice enough to pose for me even after I had declined her invitation to join her in some kind of sinful pursuit.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964e8eb1bdb0.jpg

Here's a view of the Aurora as you look back on it after passing it.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964e8eb4b34e.jpg

Next we come to Riky's Nightclub (4), formerly known as Lapsus.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964e8eb7bc77.jpg

You will see the following "Tabu" still painted on a door on a building directly next to the Riky's Nightclub. However, there is no longer a Tabu in this spot (it apparently used to be one of two Tabu's; the Tabu behind the Embajador Hotel, in a different part of town, has long existed and remains there today).

Shortly after you pass the Aurora Bar and Riky's Nightclub, you will come to the intersection of Avenida Independencia and Socorro Sanchez.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964e4b21cb12.jpg

Turn left on Socorro Sanchez and walk the long block to the ocean. You will immediately see this car wash on the right.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964e4b24d97c.jpg

Keep going and just beyond this on the right, you will come to La Parada, and there are three parts to this: La Parada, the girls club (5), La Parada, the carwash (6), and La Parada, the bar facing the ocean (7). First here's the club (5):

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964e4b27e533.jpg

Now here's the carwash (6), or at least the parking lot for the carwash, which you can't really see in this picture (it's to the left of this picture actually).

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964e4b2dc0e4.jpg

Finally, at the end of this street, we get to the Malecon, along the ocean.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964e4b31743a.jpg

Here's La Parada (7), the bar/restaurant right across the street (the Malecon) from the ocean, on the corner of Socorro Sanchez and Avenida George Washington (the Malecon).

Turn left on George Washington Avenue (the Malecon), and walk this way toward three of the biggest Santo Domingo hotels and casinos on the ocean.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964e0c41a63f.jpg

First you will come to the Jaragua Hotel and Casino (8), the front entrance of course.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964e0c44e9fd.jpg

Then to the Melia Hotel and Casino (9).

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964e0c487bd5.jpg

Next, you will see this condo tower, the Torre Veiramar (10), where I am told condos go from $400,000 US for a two bedroom up to $1.5 million US for a penthouse apartment.

Finally, you will come to the Intercontinental Hotel and Casino (11), the last hotel before turning left onto Avenida Pasteur.

As you turn left onto Avenida Pasteur, which happens to be one way back toward Avenida Independencia, you will see casas on the right. First you will find Sky High (12),

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964e723b73c4.jpg

and Satin Dolls (13).

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964dda334b0d.jpg

Both of these clubs are owned by the same owner. That SUV in the driveway belongs to the owner, and she happened to be getting out of her SUV as I was taking my pictures. She spoke to me in perfect English, and explained that she lives in Rye, New York (or at least has a home there). When I asked if I could get a discount at Sky High tonight if I do some free photo advertising for her, she just smiled. Hmmm, that means no, I guess. She spoke of both of her clubs, Sky High and Satin Dolls, and explained that one is for dancing and the other is for taking girls out, but prtyr2 later told me that he thinks Satin Dolls is not really open yet.

Next, we come to what is probably the most celebrated of casas in Santo Domingo, at least here on ISOC - Girls House (14).

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964dbc3f1af9.jpg

Conveniently next to Girls House, is the cheap Mystik Hotel (15), where you can pay for a short stay.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964dbc42e1e2.jpg

Here's another pic of the Mystik Hotel, on the left, and the Girls House, immediately to the right.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964dbc451ff7.jpg

Finally at the end of this block, at the corner of Pasteur and Avenida Independencia, is the Dominican restaurant, Hermanos Villar Restaurant (16), where you can get good inexpensive Dominican food, buffet style, in a busy restaurant. There's a bakery attached as well, I believe.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964dbc47a83f.jpg
http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964dbc49424e.jpg

As you turn left onto Avenida Independencia on the way back to the Hotel Riazor, you will immediately see lots of convenient stuff on this corner (17), including a bank/ATM machine, pharmacy, Claro and Orange Phone shops(17).

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964dbc4b7c7c.jpg

Finally, on the right as you continue to walk back along Avenida Independencia, you will see the headquarters for the political party of the current President Leonel Fernández, the Dominican Liberation Party, the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana, or PLD, (18).

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/imagehosting/134174964dbc4e85a4.jpg

With just a few more paces, you're back at home base, the Riazor Hotel (1).

Nice job. A couple of quick notes. The other Tabu at Embajador isn't new it co existed with the one next to lapsus and has been behind embajador for at least 8-9 yeasrs maybe more.

La Parada on the malecon is known by locals as "la ceniza" if you tell a taxi driver you want to go to La Parada you will get blank stares. Say La Ceniza and they know where you want to go.

I am not even sure how the owner of Sky High makes money so the idea of opening second place is funny. I had heard rumors that she ran the place for Cubans that were laundering money. Who knows. Girls house, Foxys etc are owned by Cubans.

Very nice job guys with the pics and map. This should be required reading for every newbie who wants to get his toes wet in La Capital.
Next time bring Cheeno along , he has a lot of experience with this area, plus we would have gotten FOOD PICS out of the deal, cause I was getting kind of hungry after scrolling through at all of that.

You are LUCKY he didn't post food pics. We ate at Antonios one night for great imported skirt steak Argentina Style and at david Crocketts for very good rib eyes. Plus on New years eve CD had the buffet of typical dominican food at el conuco. You'd all be gettin hungry!

Oh yeah CD had what looked like a decent pasta from La Sagna while sitting at the bar at Cats.

Food is one very big reason I way prefer SDQ over Sosua. In sosua if you want a decent steak it is El Torro and that is it. In santo domingo there are more choices. Nothing in Sosua matches David Crocketts, Antonio's, Porter House, Don Nestor or even Train, Madera and others.

On xmas eve I called chef pepper and ordered:

2 racks of lamb
4 racks of baby backs
3 imported skirt steaks
8 anugus burgers with buns

all were delivered in 45 minutes.

Yesterday I went to Price Smart and Omaha Gourmet and got:

5 half gallons of Floridas best Orange juice
18 cans of bumble bee tuna
campbells chicken noodle soup
lots of chicken breasts, thighs for making cajun chicken and rice and legs for BBQ style
Libbys canned corn
american style bacon
brown and serve breakfast sausages

at Omaha I got:

6 packs of Nathans hot dogs
6 packs of johsonville sweet italian suasage
2 bottles of jack daniels mustard spicy brown mustard
and 4 bags of Dirty Brand Mesquite BBQ Potato Chips

I have 2 Nathans dogs on the george foreman right now and the best part is the BUNS. I actually got us style hot dog buns at Omaha instead of the huge and hard dominican style buns. . . . . .yummy. . .

That's right! As for restaurants in this particular area (around the Jaragua), I ate at both the Manolo (ok, but not great, it was pretty ordinary, in my opinion, but adequate as a place for a free breakfast, and for lunch or dinner when you don't want to venture far from your hotel), and Hermanos Villar. Unfortunately, I have no food pictures from either of these places. For food pictures of the Manolo, see Kennilingus' recent trip report.

In my view, the Hermanos Villar is much better if you are looking for Dominican food. When in Rome, I do as the Romans do, so while in Santo Domingo, I ate quite a bit of Dominican food. Judging by the crowd of mostly Dominicans in Hermanos Villar, though it sits in the middle of a tourist area, I would say Hermanos Villar is the place to be. Great bang for the buck. Sorry I have no pictures of my meals of rice and chicken.

Nor do I have any food pics of the wonderful meals I had with prtyr2, at the two steakhouses he mentioned, or at a few other restaurants. Prtyr2 recommended the restaurant at the Hotel Senatorial, which is just off my map, several blocks East of the right side of my map here. As it is Swiss-owned, and has Swiss dishes on the menu, even fondue, I ordered Cordon Bleu there, and I was surprised that it was quite good, especially given the price.

I had just eaten the same thing last month at the best Swiss restaurant in New York City, and the Hotel Senatorial certainly wasn't nearly as fine, but it was much cheaper and it was surprisingly good. I also ate many times at the Hotel Conde restaurant on El Conde, and did my one and only food pic at that place (which will make it to my trip report if and when I ever finish it). Other than that, I ate lobster and shrimp with a chica and a couple of her family members (oh, no, I can already feel the heat...) at a restaurant in one of the malls, and took a chica and her kid to McDonalds, and another chica to a pizza place on El Conde. But mostly I ate Dominican food and was happy to do so.

I really didn't think we need any more photos of rice and chicken on this site, and I didn't bring my camera into the steakhouses and other restaurants I visited. Besides, there can be only one Cheeno.:)

I've seen Omaha a bunch of times, but can't for the life of me remember where it is.

What's the address?

prtyr2
01-08-2009, 07:38 AM
There are two of them. The one I go to is on Churchill just north of 27 in a plaza on right hand side. It is not the first plaza and may not be second. The easy way to find it is look for the Baskin & Robbins and Omaha is in the same Plaza.

I am not sure but I think the other one is off of Betancourt past nunez and near the bomba but I could be wrong.

The Omaha steaks are way over priced but being able to get sausage, hot dogs, mustard and most importantly BUNS is all good!

When in doubt, use the cabanas.

If I'd known about the cabanas my first night there I could have saved myself a $50 bribe to the night manager at the Intercontinental and spent $15 of it painting the cabana walls with Chica ass.

I went to four different cabañas while in SD recently. Three of them were down the Malecon (going West on George Washington Avenue) and another one was North of Avenida 27 de Febrero somewhere near the Coco's club. I'll be reporting on them soon...with pictures of the places. They are all about 700-800 pesos for several hours. If you still don't know how to find them, see Cheeno's reports.

Sort of. . . . .and ex novia had always been afraid to orgasm via g spot manipulation, but after 2 years together and just as we were breaking up I finally convinced her. The funny thing is that of course made the sex get better even after we split.

After we split she came for some booty calls probably in part to see if she could get me back and partly to enjoy her new "discovery".

One day she came to my hotel and was laying down on the bed and I was reinstalling windows on her PC. I laid down perpendicular with my head being at her feet. I sort of nodded of and later was awoken by some noise. Turns out she had removed her pants and was rubbing one out. I pretended not to notice, and eventually after she got foo she jumped on my and pretty much raped me. I stopped her and said this was not going to mean we were getting back together. She said she knew and didn't care and attacked me.

Later on, she squirted, but just a little. I have no doubt if I had continued hanging with her she woul eventually squirt more.

I also had a novia who was a gusher, but not at first. As we got to know one another during my trips we sort of found where the buttons were and before I knew it I'd created a monster. It's a shame that I had to cut it off with her but she became emotionally "needy". You can't run a long distance relationship with that sort of shit going on. It'll eventually drive both parties mad.

Are there squirt monsters without emotional neediness, or do they only exist in the porn star world? I wish I had more experience in this area. One of my first experiences, when I was 18, was with a 23-year-old nymphomaniac who squirted a lot, easily, and all the time. She fucked every guy she could find . I haven't really had any women since who could squirt like that, and not many that could squirt much at all.

18) PLD (Dominican Liberation Party, headquarters of political party of President Leonel Fernández)

gracias amigo pero digame, no hay problema caminar solo en el barrio de noche? Is it safe to walk alone in the area by night for having all this trip?

You need to take due caution as you would anywhere else, but generally speaking the area which is called Gazcue is a tourist area, and a upper class residential area, so for the most part it is very safe. I have walked in the area alone at all different hours of the night and early morning hours, but just like anywhere else is you look and act like a victim, you very well may find yourself being a victim.

Don't go with any touts anywhere and just go to where you already know where you are going and you will be fine. Most of the clubs are closed early enough even on the weekends they close around 2 am and during the week about midnight. After the clubs are closed no reason really to be in the area. Unless you are in the casinos and those areas are well lit, and well populated at all hours of the night.

¿Puede chorro de su toto durante sexo?
Can you squirt from your pussy during sex?
might help if you are presrcreening them at the clubs. LOL!

Sort of. . . . .and ex novia had always been afraid to orgasm via g spot manipulation, but after 2 years together and just as we were breaking up I finally convinced her.

Learn the cabanas and ST hotels. There is no outside punani allowed at the Intercontinental. The fine (bribe) costs more than the Chica.

Like Grey said there are plenty of Cabanas in the area, disguised as hotels, Mystic Hotel, which is next door to the Girls House, and another around the corner on Independencia, can't recall the name now. But it is located on Independencia on the corner next door to the Wellington Hotel. Stay away from the Wellington, as I understand it is owned by a gay French dude, and basically caters to that type of clientele, unless that is what you are into, in which case you probably wouldn't be on this particular site.

On a side note, last week either it was Thursday or Friday night, since I was moving I had rented a car, but I was with my semi regular chica and I couldn't stop to inquire about what they were asking, anyway we passed by that area on Independencia from the Jaguara hotel up to about Ave. Delgado, and the talent was amazing (drop dead gorgeous amazing), I guess because it is slow due to the economy etc., but I gather that many of the girls from the big clubs must be out trying to get something extra when they get off from the clubs if they hadn't scored. It had to be around 2:00 or 2:30 am. But if you do it, remember it is a buyer's market, that is why (the ones that might not normally be out there) are out there now.;) Pay and negotiate accordingly.

Is it safe for a very caucasion male to be out wandering this late?

Also for a first timer is there any cabbies you recommend that speak decent English and will take a monger on a driving tour and point out the important sites? What about from the Airport?

Thanks again for the help.

As always use caution, and be aware of your surroundings. I was in a rental so no big deal at all. As far as cabbies plenty of them will take you on a "tour" Meet up with one when you get there, and let him know what you have in mind, and to make himself available, shouldn't be a problem. I know P2 has a few favorite cabbies (you can pm him for the info), I have one myself, but he normally only works days. I have met a few others as well that seemed more than happy to have a steady client. I have sent cabbies all over the city to pick up favoritas and bring them to me, and be on call for when I am done to take them back. Just rap, and let him know just like you let the chicas know, you will be comparing his price to others. Normally except for the Mafioso cabbies on the Conde, they will be more than willing to work with you.

Most cabbies spend an inordinate amount of time waiting, either for their "turn" at the airports and hotels and other key areas, while others wait at specific locations in the city, waiting for a call in their general area.

As a result, they have a TON of down time.

They definitely appreciate a steady customer like Yayow and P2, and will be more than happy to reach an agreement on price that's acceptable to both, at far less than what the average one or two time user will pay.

I have heard Riazor on more than one occasion now is it agreed this is a good place? What about what he said about the extra $7 for a guest only sometimes. Does anyone have any guest experience to share about the cost?

I noticed that 250/330 of your posts are asking the same redundant hotel questions and most answers are found by searching, have you even made your maiden trip yet?

When I was there in June I was only in POP and Sosua briefly. I did read Cheeno's report and others but only saw one mention of the extra guest fees at Riazor. The questions may be redundant but as many have posted things change constantly in the DR and so do the hotels so I was just trying to figure out the best places to stay. It seems at least to me more interesting than reading about people bitching about stuff.

$7 guest fee is CHEAP, and well worth it, because some of the other hotels will hit you with a $24 guest fee, and poss even more. They tried that shit with us at the Barcelo Lina eventhough we tipped the guards at night.

Any of the big hotels on the Malecon are nice and you can find a deal for most of them via the internet, the only problem with those hotels are they as a rule aren't monger friendly, so if you are coming with a chica, I certainly recommend them, but if you are planning on bringing a few strays in, you need to think twice, because you will pay with frustration and to bribe the staff, and that is not worth it, in my book.

Even though I can allegedly get the hookup from a friend for a $59 room at the Jaragua, I plan on sticking with the Aparta Hotel Roma.

I went twice around the track today; once when it was light to make it easier to get around and then around 8pm. It was a Monday night if that has any impact.

The Parada club and Riky's were both closed at 8pm.

At 6pm there were 3 girls in the Girl House (all 5's). At 8pm there were about 10 chicas at Sky High. 4,5, and 6's and 2 7's. The one I took gave rushed service.

She originally tried to charge me 3500 until I said it was 2500 next door. I let her buy a drink and her whiskey and my beer cost 450 (no change given from 500). And the taxi driver charged 300 when I said it should be 200 but the house security said 300 so I didn't want to make a scene or walk away with chica in tow.

I expect several veterans to laugh at me now....go ahead.

The link below, which Maretti provided in KoKi9290's recent thread Reporting from SDQ (http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=838906), has the best map for Santo Domingo mongerers I have yet seen. I will definitely use it when I go back. Not a photo tour of the Malecon/Hotel Jaragua area like this thread, it is a much more comprehensive map, an annotated google map for mongerers throughout Santo Domingo:

check out some of the trip reports there are full reports on all of the casa's

but here is a quick overview

dollHouse and foxy's cater to tourists and rich dominicans. They have amazing girls from both DR and other countries but all cost $200 and up.

Pink pony is out of the way for the normal tourist at the end of nunez de caceros and kennedy. 2-4 girls all pretty good looking 1500rd buys you 30mins.

There are tons of other clubs and spots to go around santo domingo. i hope your spanish is good

Thanks, this map helps a lot since I just moved to la capital from Puerto Plata. I have a spinner lined up already but wanted to hang out for a few drinks first before heading to a hotel or cabana. I am familar with that area cuz I stayed at Maison Gartreux down from the Bodega Independecia. I wanted to go to la Bodega and have a few drinks then jump a cab or walk to either a cabana or hotel closeby. I think the cabanas are further down the malecon. So my question: is there a decent hotel comparable to price and ameneties as a cabana there closeby or best to jump a cab to a cabana down the malecon. Just looking for a place to hang out first knock the edge off. It would even be better a club around there inside kinda dark to hang out first then go to hotel closeby or as I mentioned jump a cab to cabana. Planning on going around 5 pm today. Thanks, Puerto Plata is el campo compared to SDQ. lol

Anything new to report?
