It's a two way thing, this respect they have for the monarchy. In the early 90's, when the generals didn't like thre results of an election they took control. The King ordered the troops back to the barracks and restored democracy.

It's a VERY bad scan but it's Page 65 of the PDF, Page 115 of the book, bottom paragraph.
Pretty much all of the news agencies won't re-print it.
I forgot I had a copy of Adobe Acrobat on another PC, I cleaned it up and turned the pages the correct way....

I saw the article on Yahoo. It said he had been treated quite poorly so far in jail.
"He said he endured "unspeakable suffering" during his pretrial detention, but did not elaborate."

Not that I think what happened to himm is OK, I still think he is an idiot. Part of international travel is learning a bit about the customs of where you are going. I don't have sympathy for those who litter in Singapore either.

I hope Jimmy doesn't recognise himself in my novel. I am going to make him six feet tall with flowing blond hair and a pony tail to put him off the scent. And mine is bound to sell more than seven copies. Thunderstar alone has promised to buy six copies (he was drunk at the time).

This guy was a fool, even occasional visitors are well aware of the lese-majeste crime status, and this guy was living there!
I was surprised to read that the Swiss who got 10 yrs for painting graffiti on one of the king’s picture got royal pardon for Thai new year and he was inside for only a few months – I can’t believe his luck.
I think the king was studying and living for some time in Switzerland, apart from having part of his wealth in Swiss banks, as any self-respected wealthy aristocrat, so I guess the Swiss government’s network of contacts with the Thai royals did a good job on this occasion to free that poor fucker.
As for the Australian, now that he is jail and has got all this media attention, I am sure he will manage to double his book’s sales, that is, he will sell 14 copies in total.

This is an excellent book about life inside Thai jails, based on a real story:
Amazon.com: Used and New: The Damage Done: Twelve Years of Hell in a Bangkok Prison (http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/184018275X/ref=sr_1_olp_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232476969&sr=1-1)
I thought it’d be similar to being in hell, but while reading this book I realised it’s actually even worse…
