The World Bank (WB) representative in the DR, Cristina Malmberg, cites the electrical crisis and high levels of corruption as two of the main obstacles for economic growth to become an effective means of reducing poverty. She based her information on three studies on economic development, competitiveness and the fight against poverty, which were conducted by the WB, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and other international organizations, according to Diario Libre. She stated that the electric sector's loss during the past year was greater than US$1 billion. Malmberg spoke during the American Chamber of Commerce's monthly luncheon at the Jaragua Hotel.
