The US Coast Guard in Puerto Rico said yesterday that the local authorities do not know when the 54 illegal travelers who were rescued on the high seas will be returned to the Dominican Republic. US Coastguard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad said that the illegal aliens were being investigated in preparation for their deportation to their country of origin. The official was interviewed by telephone by investigative journalist Huchi Lora for CDN Radio. Castrodad said that they are carrying out biometric tests to collect a set of data aimed at halting illegal travel to the neighboring island.
A maritime security vessel intercepted the illegal immigrants when they tried to get into Puerto Rico after the home made craft got into serious trouble, nearly foundering, due to bad weather.
