The Dominican Republic won four medals in the XX Panamerican Karate Championship held in Santo Domingo at the Palacio de los Deportes. The DR won two silver and two bronze. Alberto Zabala lost to world champion Luis Plumacher of Venezuela in the 60 kilogram men's division. Zabala qualified to participate in the Brazil 2007 Pan Am Games. His teammate Alberto Mancebo lost the gold medal to Venezuelan Jean Pena, but also qualified for the 2007 Pan Am Games. Gustavo Dionisio won bronze in the 75 kilogram division and Junio Beltre in the Open Men's Division. The event is taking place this weekend in Santo Domingo at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center. It is an important qualifying event for the Brazil Pan Am Games.
