Seductive Latin rhythms are starting to capture young people in India who see in salsa and merengue an original and entertaining form of escaping rigid rules of society. According to a report by EFE news agency, salsa and merengue offer the perfect excuse for young men and women to mix, wear sexy clothing and go out to have fun and hold each other by the waist while dancing. In the streets of India it is practically impossible to see a man and a woman holding hands. Physical contact is "prohibited" socially in public and this is where Latin dances introduce the exception: not only is it not prohibited to touch, it is actually a requirement. "Salsa has changed my life. When you learn to dance it you can no longer dance anything else, it's like a drug," said smiling and head-wobbling Idrees John, probably one of the first citizens of Kashmir to master dancing salsa.
