New owners of vehicles now by law need to transfer the registration into their name or they will not be issued a renewal of the license plate sticker. The Executive Branch has put a law into force that obliges anyone who acquires a motor vehicle to pay the transfer fees and put the vehicle in their name within a six-month period. Government fee collections will increase, but vehicle owners will benefit from the simpler procedure.
Article 1 of the law says that when an individual or company, via an authentic act or under a private signing, transfers the ownership of a vehicle whose registration has been issued by the Department of Taxes (DGII), they can advise the office of the transfer. A copy of both buyer and seller's ID card (cedula), payment of RD$300, a copy of the vehicle's registration and a copy of the sales contract duly notarized and registered at the local civil registry office are needed.
Article 2 indicates that the DGII will register the transfer, the name, last name and legal identification of the new owner, data that should be clear in any ownership certificate issued on the vehicle.
Article 3 of the law says that the transfer of the ownership of the vehicle, as well as payment of taxes, will be made as established by the Law on Collection Efficiency Number 173-07.
