The Las Americas International Airport (AILA) inaugurated a new runway yesterday, one able to handle the new Airbus 380, the world's largest passenger plane. According to Aerodom, the concessionaire of the airport, the new runway cost US$19 million and is one of the few that can receive the giant aircraft. President Leonel Fernandez was there to cut the inaugural ribbon. The additional landing strip will facilitate more arrivals and departures out of Santo Domingo's main port of entry.
The new runway is 3,354 meters long (close to 11,000 feet) and 75 meters wide. The construction of the runway and taxiway was done with assistance from the Federal Aviation Authority of the United States.
At the event, Juan Carlos Torres, president of Aerodom announced the expansion of the terminal at the Gregorio Luperon International Airport in Puerto Plata and the re-modeling of the South Satellite at AILA. Still another investment will be the construction of a modern freight terminal to service exports.
