The director general of the Santo Domingo Water and Sewage Corporation (CAASD), Ramon Rivas announced that due to the heavy rains and floods over the past nine days, the Duey and Isa-Mana rivers aqueducts are out of service. This will cause water shortages in many sectors in Santo Domingo. In a press release from the CAASD, the official explained that the intense rains brought landslides and rubble. Among the sectors most affected are Los Alcarrizos, Pantoja, Villa Maria, Villa Morada, Girasoles, 24 de Abril, El INVI, Los Libertadores, Paraiso, Las Mercedes, Los Peralejos, Altos de Arroyo Hondo III, Villa Claudia in Arroyo Hondo, El Chucho, Savica, La Pina, Juana Saltitopa and Pedro Brand. The CAASD is monitoring the situation and its directors say that as soon as the rains stop the aqueducts will go back into operation. Rivas asked for patience in the barrios that are affected by the scarcity of water and reiterated that the closure of the two systems is due solely to the murkiness of the waters from the Haina River. Rivas also said that the Community Affairs Department of the CAASD says water tanks have been sent to affected areas to supply residents.
