The central part of Santiago de los Caballeros was an oasis of peace and quiet yesterday as the Ecological Society of the Cibao (SOECI) closed off the historic central district of the Dominican Republic's second city. The SOECI was celebrating the World Environment Day (Earth Day). For a few hours the city center was unpolluted and peaceful. The corner of 30 de Marzo and Calle del Sol is considered to be one of the noisiest places in the entire country. Nelson Batista, the society president, said that the official ceremonies began with a seminar on the conservation of native bird species at the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra. There were puppet shows for children and the young at heart, an environmental rally, a discussion panel on the pollution of the Yaque River and a recitation of the Environmental Declaration of Santiago.
