After continued pressure from fans and musicians alike, the Casandra Awards, which will be held on 24 March, has included the new and still controversial category of "Merengue de Calle" (street Merengue). However, the new award will not be voted by the ACROARTE judges, but voting has been put in the hands of fans, who will be allowed to phone in with their votes as of this Saturday at 9am. Nominated performers include Omega, Silvio Mora, El Cata, El Sujeto and Tulile. The Merengue de Calle genre, (considered a derogatory term by fans and artists), is relatively new on the Dominican music scene, only having developed within the last five to seven years. However, it has become very popular with young people, while drawing staunch criticisms from Merengue purists who say the genre should not even be called music. Critics also point to the sexual and violent nature of some lyrics as arguments against the music. Still, Merengue de Calle, also known as Mambo, is here. Fans can call (809) 220-2200 (from landlines) or (809) 200 0002 (from cell phones or from other parts of the DR). Codetel, which is running the phone voting, says voters will only be able to vote once per phone.
