Ministry of Environment forestry plans

The Ministry of Environment (Semarena) says that it is spending RD$25 million a month on increasing the country's forest coverage. The Quisqueya Verde program includes 255 brigades planting trees in all the country's forests. The Ministry says that over 3,000 people are now working in the program that will also restore degraded areas and turn them into ecological parks and green municipal recreation areas. The goal is to plant 20,000 million trees by 2009 in 365,000 tareas (1 tarea = 629 square meters). To accomplish this goal, the Ministry is cultivating 1 million tree saplings in 24 nurseries nationwide.
