According to ADOEXPO president Richard Koenig, Dominican exports fell by 15% during the first quarter of 2009. Koenig attributed this sharp decline to the international financial crisis that has affected buyers in Europe and the US and to the lack of incentives for Dominican productive and export sectors. Koenig added that an inability to promptly receive financing, decreased levels of equality towards regional markets, and high energy costs are the obstacles that are impeding this sector from competing as international markets change with the implementation of free trade agreements.
