El Caribe reports that 45% of new jobs in the DR are in the informal sector. The paper reports that work in domestic services, public taxi driving, colmados and salons has increased in recent years, which should be raising concerns within various productive sectors. According to economist Miguel Ceara, 30 years ago there was a 1 to 1 ratio between the growth of the GDP and growth of jobs, meaning that for every 1% that GDP grew, jobs grew by 1%. But in recent years, according to Ceara, the correlation between GDP growth and job growth has dropped to 1% GDP growth to 0.5% job growth.
