The Association of Show Business Writers (Acroarte) will honor Johnny Pacheco, the Dominican composer, arranger, bandleader and producer during the 25th Casandra Awards for the best of the year in show business. Pacheco is known as one of the most influential figures in salsa music and has nine Grammy nominations, ten Gold records and numerous awards to his credit. The Casandra Awards will take place 24 March at the National Theater and will be televised nationwide. They are the local equivalent of the Oscars or Grammy awards.
A segment produced by Manuel Tejada and dedicated to the music of Johnny Pacheco has will be featured during the Casandra Awards ceremony. Well-known salsa musicians have been invited to perform in the segment.
During his visit to Santo Domingo, Pacheco will be named ambassador of authentic Dominican and West Indian values by the Senate, and the state university, UASD will award him with the title of Honorary Professor of the School of the Arts. On 15 April, the Dominican Consulate in New York will honor him with the "Meritorious Citizen Order".
By coincidence, Pacheco was born on the same date, 24th March 1935. His father was the well-known bandleader and clarinetist of the legendary Santa Cecilia Orchestra. In the late 1940s, when he was 11, he moved to New York City with his family. He studied percussion at the Juilliard School of Music. He played with the Charlie Palmieri orchestra for many years, until forming his first band, Pacheco y su Charanga in 1960. His first album sold over 100,000 copies in the first year. He went on to become the musical director of the legendary Fania All-Stars band.
