Americas' Sail, the Western Hemisphere's spectacular tall ship event, is coming to the Dominican Republic this month. [DR1 Travel News erroneously reported last week the event would be held "next year."]

Santo Domingo has been chosen as a port of call for the A-Class Race for the Americas' Sail Gold Trophy. A-Class ships are large schooners with more than three masts usually used for naval training.

Coming for the event is Brazil"s 249 foot Cisne Branco, champion of America's Sail. The 71 foot Wolf that is a replica of a pirate ship will be representing the United States. Both ships will be open for short tours.

Sail America 2006 will be making a stopover at the Port of Santo Domingo (Puerto Don Diego and Marina Bartolome Colon) with events planned for the Plaza Espana and Sans Souci Beach from 15 to 20 June. During a maritime festival planned for the occasion in Santo Domingo, the winning ship will receive the Americas Sail 2006 cup. From Santo Domingo, the ships will leave for Beaufort, North Carolina, for the Class B (smaller two mast ships) race will take place.

Sail America 2006 begins with a week long Fortaleza Sail Festival in Brazil (27 May-3 June). The Class A ships race to the Dominican Republic on 4 June with scheduled arrival in Santo Domingo on 15 June. A Parade of Sail has been scheduled as well as the Class A Trophy presentation of the Seamanship Trophy to the authorities of the city of Santo Domingo.

Americas' Sail started in 1988 as an ongoing opportunity for the western hemisphere to entertain the world at an event that encourages international sailing competition and promotes the brotherhood of the sea.

In the Dominican Republic, the event is organized by the Dominican Naval League with the support of the Association of Hotels of Santo Domingo, Sans Souci Ports, the Navy, City Government of Santo Domingo, and the Ministry of Tourism, among others.
