The Dominican Ambassador to Washington, Flavio Dario Espinal, played down the possible consequences of the postponement of the DR-CAFTA free trade agreement, which had been due to come into effect on July 1st. "I don't think it would be catastrophic" for the treaty to be postponed for another couple of months, said the diplomat. He bases his opinion on the fact that Costa Rica has still not ratified the treaty and it has not become effective in Guatemala, the two largest economies in Central America. He said that 30 or 60 days in the life of a nation or a free trade agreement does not represent a great loss, and that it is natural for these types of processes to take a long time, as reported by Diario Libre.
