For any of the long time residents of the Dominican Republic, the news makes a lot of sense. Housing has doubled in a study that covered just 21 years. According to the 1993 census, 55.5% of Dominicans lived in urban areas, and the projection for the year 2000 was for that figure to reach 60%. A study by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) showed that between 1981 and 2002 housing grew by 1,288,761 units, a 100% increase. The greatest increases were found in Santiago and Santo Domingo. An interesting breakdown of the numbers for 2002 shows that there were 1,958,030 private housing units, 166,628 were apartments, 147,859 were considered shacks of various types and 26,099 were barracks (probably constructed for hurricane or flood victims).
